BOLTON Wanderers' striker Roger Hunt, the hero of Liverpool's Kop for more than 10 years, is to quit football at the end of the season. Hunt, who played a big part in England's World Cup win in 1966, signed for the Wanderers nearly two years ago for a £33,000 fee. "I'll be 34 at the end of the season, and I don't want to get to the stage where I have to struggle," he said.

CONTINUOUS heavy rain caused widespread flooding of houses, works and roads in the North today. In Bolton, the rainfall last night - 2.004in fell in 12 hours - was the heaviest recorded at the Queen's Park observatory since July 2nd, 1888, when 2.203in was recorded. Last night, at Raikes Clough, the River Croal overflowed its banks at several points, covering surrounding fields to a depth of several feet and putting the Corporation Sewage Works at Hacken partly out of action.
So far this month 7in of rain have fallen on Bolton.
From the Evening News, September 20, 1871
A VERY painful tragedy, which has curiously escaped the cognisance of the English journals, has, we are informed, recently taken place in London. M Edouard de ---, a former attache at the French embassy, recently met at the table of Sir William X---, member of Parliament, a German colonel. The colonel, on learning the nationality of his fellow guest, at once began to chaff him about the French disasters in the late war. M. Edouard de --- did not hesitate a moment. He took out his card and threw it at the head of the colonel. The duel took place a few miles out of London. Pistols were the chosen weapons, and the German colonel received the outraged Frenchman's ball full in the chest, and fell dead on the sward. The Frenchman quitted London immediately.
Persons of a sceptical turn of mind may raise an objection to the veracity of this history by reminding us that there is no member of Parliament whose surname begins with an X. Such an objection would, however, only tend to disclose the objector's ignorance of the geometrical fact that X is an unknown quantity, and is not to be resolved by references to parliamentary companions.
