TREBLE-winner Darren Howarth finished on the losing side in a hard-fought Premier Division match.

The second week of the Bolton and District Table Tennis League saw MET A go down to British Aerospace A 5-4.

Glen Payne added another for MET, but two each for Andy Christopher and Steve Crook and one for Ronnie Pennington took the home team to victory.

Similarly, Jim Chadwick's maximum - plus one from Mick Dore - was not enough to prevent Little Lever A winning 5-4 with two each for Ron Durose and Phil Riley plus a single from Ted Foster.

Doe Hey A beat Chorley Old Road A 6-3 in Division One - thanks to a treble from Chris Byrne, two from Simon Charnley and one from John Howarth.

Steve Williams (2) and Kevan Orton (1) made the reply.

Also in this division, Horwich Bridge B defeated Wingates A 5-4 with two victories each for Jim Collier and Clive Taylor and the clincher from Roy Davies.

For the visitors John Bradbury had a treble to which Alan Bradbury added one more.

Division Two saw Ladybridge A triumph 6-3 against Bolton Road, the former Hicks outfit.

Alex Waring (3), George Simpson (2) and David Bolton (1) did the business against two for Irving Cordwell and one for Rodney Hall.

There was yet another unavailing treble in this division when only Frank Green could add to Duncan Kay's maximum and the Black Dog at Belmont lost 5-4 after making the long trip to play Little Lever C.

Andrew Seddon and Alan Price won two and the timeless Jack Seddon finished with one.

A similar result went the other way in Division three when the Little Lever D team had two victories each for Alan Lansdale and Garry Pilling.

But it was not quite enough at Hilton A against two each for Lostock exiles Paul Kay and Martin Finch plus one for Brian Carter.

Elsewhere in the division a treble for Roger Lee, two for Brian Young and one for George Dawson saw BAe B home against Breightmet Electrics.

Dennis Lomas (2) and George Hindley (1) scored for the home team.

In Division four Richard Reading and Peter Hardman were on song with trebles for Jubilee C against Beesley Green on a night when Alan Platt, Keith Carter and Jon Kippen won one each.

Also in Division Four, a treble for Jack Quin, two for John Swarsbrick and one for Alan Weall saw YMCA to a 6-3 victory over my friends in BEN C.

Doug Nolan (2) and Jack Higginbottom (1) scored the three.

In Division Five there was a convincing 8-1 result for Meadow Hill C against Heaton F.

Jack Riley and Jack Smith had trebles and Colin Cartwright had two victories. Glen Roberts saved the whitewash.

The Withins B team of Alan Jackson (2), R. Hinchliffe (2) and Tony Mason (1) secured a 5-4 victory over Salford Police B, for whom Dave Stevens had a treble and Barrie Horridge contributed one. SECRETARY Christine Crumblehulme (01204 406693) has rounded-up bits and pieces about the league and the developing Hilton Centre in Nuttall Avenue, Horwich.

Cup draws will be made during the next committee meeting at Hilton at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 26.

The telephone number for Beesley Green Secretary Keith Carter is 0161-755-3875 and not what it says in the handbook.

A Bolton Vets' inter-league team of John Howarth, Brian Gooddy and Vinny Croft played a Division Three match against Oldham at the Jubilee Centre and lost 8-1 - Vinny Croft saving the whitewash.

The next inter-league match at the Jubilee is on Friday, October 11, when Bolton Men play Mid-Cheshire.

All league players are reminded that they should be selling the raffle tickets they have been allocated as part of the efforts to raise money for the vital re-furbishment project at the Hilton.

Aerobics classes are starting at Hilton on Wednesday, October 2 from 6pm to 7pm and division four and five teams are being asked to note that Wednesday matches will start at 7.30pm and not 7pm as stated.

Kirit Chauhan and Nil Patel, who previously played for VHP, are looking for teams in either Division Three or Four.

Heaton B need another player for Division One and Guild Hall need a reserve.

Jubilee B are now playing at the YMCA on Monday nights, MET B are at the Jubilee Centre on Tuesday nights and the Bolton Road Sports Club match night is Monday and not Tuesday.

The league sends this message: "Will secretaries please note that matches can only be cancelled when the home venue is unavailable.

"A team is allowed to use either a player from a lower division or failing that a guest player may be used." RESULTS AND TABLES
