SIR: Bolton Lesbian Line wish to respond to the article entitled 'Gay Wedding Backlash'.
We would like to point out that lesbians in Bolton contribute financially via council tax in the same way as heterosexuals and, as such, are entitled to equal access to council services and facilities.
Cllr Critchley's views are based on prejudice and ignorance and his opinion that same sex relationships are disgusting is evidence of his personal homophobia.
An oft repeated myth about lesbian and gay communities is that we are unable to form lasting relationships and that our relationships do not demonstrate the same level of commitment as heterosexual marriages and relationships.
The recent ceremony chosen by the two lesbians was a public statement which demonstrated their commitment to each other; a ceremony which is considered natural and desirable by heterosexuals.
The issue is not whether public buildings should be used by lesbians , but rather that as lesbians why do we not have equal access to legal recognition of our relationships and the social and economic advantages such recognition brings.
Basic human rights dictate that we are entitled to equal treatment. We applaud Cllr Riley on his intelligent response to Cllr Critchley's homophobia.
Sue Hale,
Bolton Lesbian Line.
