WHEN national Crime figures show a sharp rise, we worry. And reports of the biggest increase in violent crime for eight years prompts even more serious concern.
The 5.1 million overall crime tally is slightly higher than the previous 12 months, although the British Crime Survey reveals a drop in offences like burglary and vehicle theft which more people suffer.
In considering these figures, however, it is worth keeping a sense of proportion. Social factors affect a variety of crime: more women now feel they can report rape cases and the door has been opened on domestic abuse.
As they caution on TV's Crimewatch, don't have nightmares. The chances of being the victim of violent crime are actually slim.
