GUDNI Bergsson has pencilled in his name for the 'Clash of the Wanderers' at Molineux.

The Burnden captain, who feared he would miss the two games because of World Cup duties, is confident he can persuade the Iceland FA to let him play in next Wednesday's big Division One game against Wolves.

In a move that could prove a major boost for Wanderers, Bergsson believes he can delay joining up with his national side, who play two qualifying games in four days - in Lithuania on Saturday, October 5 and at home to Romania on the 9th.

Colin Todd is faced with the situation of losing Bergsson and Northern Ireland international Gerry Taggart, two of his three senior centre-backs, for the games at Wolves and Oxford (Saturday, Oct 5). Wanderers cannot ask for the games to be postponed unless they have a third player on international duty.

Bergsson, who captains his country, has no option but to miss the Oxford fixture but confirmed today: "I am optimistic that they (Iceland) will let me play in the October 2nd game at Wolves.

"The rules say they are entitled to make me report five days before the Lithuania match but they are usually co-operative in these situations.

"It's down to them but I think they will allow me to report after the Wolves game."

Northern Ireland boss Bryan Hamilton is not expected to offer the same privilege to Taggart, who is in his squad for the qualifier against Armenia in Belfast on Oct 5.

But having Bergsson for one game would ease Wanderers' selection problems considerably.

Simon Coleman, out since pre-season with a calf injury, is likely to get his first runout of the season in tomorrow night's reserve team game at Derby.
