THIS week roughly 2,750,000 contributory old-age pensioners and over 250,000 widow pensioners over the age of 60 have been collecting their new higher rate pension books. Mr James Griffiths, Minister of National Insurance, says: "A weekly pension of 26s instead of 10s (or 42s instead of 20s for a married couple) will enable them to pass the evening of their lives more comfortably than otherwise would be the case."

From the Evening News, September 27, 1871

ABOUT twenty minutes to six o'clock last evening, a serious accident occurred on Bolton Moor, whereby Mr James Barlow, of the Ship Inn, Bradshawgate, had a very narrow escape of life. Having been for some time in a weakly state of health, Mr Barlow had accompanied his brother-in-law, Mr William Tong, of Gate Pike, for a drive. The horse, which was young and very fresh, became exceedingly restive, commenced kicking violently, and between Mr Tong's brewery and Mr Councillor Ellis's shop, the trap was smashed by the horse's violence. Mr Tong and his son managed to escape with a somewhat severe shaking; but Mr Barlow was pitched violently out of the trap, the left side of his head coming into contact with the pavement. So serious were the injuries that Mr Barlow did not recover thorough consciousness until this morning, when he was believed to be out of danger, though very ill.
