A MAN who fled Tenerife while being held in connection with the death of a Bolton man is in jail in Britain, the BEN can reveal today.

He was arrested by immigration officials when he arrived back in the country carrying a false passport last month.

As reported in the Bolton Evening News, two men from Bolton escaped the Spanish holiday island while under arrest pending a trial.

They were being held fter Michael Hulse, aged 37, from Solent Drive in Darcy Lever, died in hospital in April, from severe head injuries.

Their passports were held by Tenerife police and they were refused permission by a judge to leave the island.

They were told to report regularly to the court, but disappeared at the end of June.

Both are believed to have made their way back to Britain. A BEN investigation has revealed that one of them was arrested on August 1 in a sea port at Margate.

He was remanded in custody and, a week later, was jailed by Margate magistrates for four months for using a false passport.

But it is thought that once he has served his sentence he will be free to go.

The other man is believed to be back in Bolton.

At an inquest this week, Bolton coroner Mr Martin Coppel recorded a verdict of "unlawful killing".

He added: "For the family this has been an absolutely dreadful occurrence and one they will have great difficulty in coming to terms with. They will only be content when justice has been done."

He wrote outlining the inquest findings to the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester David Wilmot.

Yesterday GMP confirmed that they are liaising with the Spanish authorities.

No extradition order has been made since the two men left Tenerife.

Before one can be made, a judge has to examine all the case files to decide whether there is a murder charge to be faced. This could take years.

Michael's mother Irene is considering taking out her own private prosecution.

She said: "There seems to be a loophole in the law which would allow these men to remain here and never face charges for Michael's death.

"I have written to the Prime Minister, the Foreign Office, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester and my MEP Gary Titley.

"Not one of them seems able to help me."
