SIR: I refer to the news item (BEN, September 19) on the problem of crossing Bury Road, Tonge Fold adjacent to Colenso Road.

Some months ago I was requested by local club officials to contact our MP over this problem after a series of accidents involving residents living behind this main road on both sides.

I contacted our MP who in turn got in touch with the Highways Authority, and he received a reply that a survey had been carried out by the department, and it was established at that time that according to the traffic flow, the ratio of vehicles did not merit the introduction of a crossing in that area.

It has always been felt by residents that such a crossing is, and always has been, a necessary factor in this area for the safety of residents using the road regularly.
