COUNCILLORS in Westhoughton are to lodge a protest about the irregularity of bus services in the town. Cllr David Wilkinson said the effects of de-regulation are beginning to bite in the area and singled out two services which passengers have complained about. He said the 548 fails to appear on many occasions and at times does not adhere to the timetable leaving people waiting a long time for a bus. He also mentioned the 715 service which covers the north of the town which is also irregular.
"We have got to make the strongest protests regarding the irregularities of these services," said Cllr Wilkinson.
Cllr Mrs Jean Green said she had complaints about the 37 service which runs along Church Street. She said this was the only service which catered for people living on Manchester Road.
Cllr John Ainscough said that in a few weeks the 715 service which travels down Dicconson Lane, will cease to exist.
Cllr Wilkinson said this was even more depressing news: "These are areas which need a bus service, particularly for the elderly and people who do not have cars. A bus is vital here, it is not a luxury."
The council agreed that the town clerk write to GM North First Bus, Blue Bus and Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive to protest about the services.
Cllr Brian Clare suggested that the council should also organise a public meeting.
