THE Turnpike Centre in Leigh Library will have a busy night tomorrow when it hosts a film show by the North West Film Archive celebrating 100 years of cinema.
Its starts at 7.30pm.
The show is free of charge but seats should be booked in advance by ringing 01942 404566.
And on the same night, before the show and again in the interval, local history librarian Tony Ashcroft will be signing copies of his new book The Sixpenny Rush, a guide to the old cinemas of Leigh, Tyldesley, Atherton and Astley, which has some star-spangled names who have contributed their own personal favourite films.
Among the stars listed are Joan Collins, Sir John Mills, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir David Putnam, and TV movie supremo Barry Norman.
Tony said: "It is the first book, I believe, covering all the major movie houses in the four areas, and will also include various other venues where films were shown. I hope it will bring back many happy memories for local people of the time they used to go to the cinema regularly.
"I know some people called it the 'tuppeny rush', the 'penny rush', and so on, but in its latter days the people of the area used to talk of the 'sixpenny rush', and that's the reason for the title."
The book will go on general sale in selected outlets on Friday , priced £4.95.
