SIR: I am writing to you, as I am absolutely devastated at the callous way I was treated on a nostalgic return visit to the birthplace of myself and my late husband, who died in June this year after a very long illness. We were both born and reared in Bolton and married there 52 years ago. I hadn't been back for many years. As I am still coming to terms with losing him, I was offered, as a special treat, a visit to Bolton. As it was Friday the 13th, I should have realised that things would go wrong. We visited the town centre and saw the changes to the Market Hall. On our way out by the back entrance, as we approached the doors, I suddenly realised that my handbag did not feel right. On looking down, I saw that the zip on the side pocket, where I keep my purse, was open and my purse had gone. This has never happened to me before and I am still not able to understand why anyone would want to treat the elderly and vulnerable in this way. I did not realise that Bolton is now such a den of iniquity. There were no signs to warn people to be extra vigilant. The theft was reported to the police and a security guard who were very sympathetic and we were told that it was the fifth theft in the Market Hall that day - none of which were recovered, including mine. What a sorry state the town is in.
I am ashamed to acknowledge that I am a Boltonian after this, and will never again visit your town.
