MILL Reef took his total winnings to more than £250,000 with a great victory in the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, Europe's richest race, in Paris yesterday. Geoff Lewis unleashed the Epsom Derby winner about two furlongs out in the one mile four furlongs race, and he sailed home to a victory worth £104,989.

THE members of the Bolton Royal Infirmary general committee was told yesterday at their monthly meeting that during the month 409 new in-patients were admitted, giving a daily average of patients resident as 181. In the out-patients, over 1,200 new patients were treated, the total number of attendances made in this department being 3,655. The total of casualty persons treated in the past four weeks also exceeded 1,200. The daily average in this department was 123. At the end of September, 1097 people were waiting admission to the infirmary. Fifty-four children were awaiting admission for tonsil and adenoid treatment.

AT the Board of Guardians, Mr Lever said that small pox had made its appearance in Sharples in five cases, and as one death had occurred he wished to know whether the Astley Bridge Local Board or the Guardians were the authority for providing disinfecting powder for use in the district. - Mr Hayhurst said they had small pox at Farnworth, and there disinfectants were supplied free to any person who chose to apply at the Local Board offices.
