SIR: We are advised in connection with the naming of Bolton's new stadium that sentiment no longer plays a part in modern football. This may be true of the big business consortiums of the Premier League, but at Bolton Wanderers it is, thankfully, still very much in evidence.
Earlier this year a life-long supporter not only received an 80th birthday greetings card signed by Colin Todd and the players, but also a handwritten personal message from the club's president Nat Lofthouse. This kind gesture really made her day.
As for a name for the new stadium, we need to look no further than the man himself. Nat's service to one club has never been surpassed or even equalled, so, in the year when Bolton Wanderers leave the past behind and look towards the future, how fitting it would be to see him receive a knighthood in the New Year's Honours List. I think the Sir Nat Lofthouse Stadium sounds just fine.
