SIR: Amid the current clamour to name the Wanderers new stadium after Nat Lofthouse, the contributors to your letters page appear to be forgetting that football is no longer merely restricted to the activities on the field but also off it.

Anybody who watched Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League last season will testify that many of the current squad, who may be adequate for the First Division, fall way short of the standard necessary to consolidate our position in the Premier League, should we gain promotion. We, therefore, need the maximum amount of money available to strengthen the squad to avoid being a 'yo-yo team'.

Nat Lofthouse appears to have already enjoyed generous treatment form the Club and I would suggest that his Presidency is more than adequate tribute for his achievements.

We cannot afford to spurn the opportunity to generate a substantial amount of money from a big name sponsor for the sake of misplaced sentiment and at the expense of improving the team.
