SIR, - From your paper of Tuesday evening I perceive that the Rev. Joseph Posnett, in the Farnworth Wesleyan Chapel, made some very severe strictures on the conduct of the people at the last "wakes". As the rev. gentleman has only been resident for 13 months, he should be challenged for public proof of the assertions made. Of his own personal knowledge, Mr Posnett knew little of the fair beyond seeing young women going into a public house, and whom he very uncharitably denounced. I deny Mr Posnett's assertions, and I do so on the ground of careful public observation of the last fair and former "wakes", backed by the opinion of the police, public officials and the press. At former "wakes" there used to be racing and all kinds of gambling, in addition to drinking, but at the last fair there was no racing, no gambling, only one case of pocket picking, not a single charge of drunkenness preferred by the police, and not a public house or beerhouse reported. - Yours respectfully, A Farnworthian.
