ONE of Bolton's most famous sons has been appointed as the new Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield. Sir Ernest Hall, whose father was a mule-spinner at Eagle Mill, has achieved national acclaim as a musician and business entrepreneur. He started his own textile business in 1961 and later transformed the derelict Dean Clough mills in Halifax into a thriving centre for business, arts, design and education.
The restoration work over a period of 13 years has created what Sir Ernest describes as a "practical utopia."
Mr Brian Ward, President of Huddersfield University Council, said today: "We are delighted that Sir Ernest Hall has accepted the position of Chancellor.
"His many talents, his achievements and his high reputation will enhance the standing of the University and will harmonise well with the University's achievements and plans."
Sir Ernest will be Chancellor for five years after a ceremonial installation in the near future.
As the titular head of the University he will preside on all ceremonial occasions.
In 1989, when the university was the Polytechnic of Huddersfield, Sir Ernest was awarded an honorary fellowship.
A similar accolade came his way in his home town in 1994 when he was awarded an honorary fellowship by Bolton Institute.
Sir Ernest received the OBE in 1986, became a Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire five years later and was knighted in 1993.
He has received numerous other awards on the other side of the Pennines, but retains his affection for his home town, where he lived in the now demolished Haydock Street.
He was the chief guest at the annual dinner of the Bolton and Bury Chamber of Commerce in May last year.
A gifted pianist, he still performs regularly.
