A PENSIONER was fighting for her life in the intensive care unit of Bolton General Hospital today after an accident with a truck.

Gladys Haslam, aged 77, of Kershaw Avenue, Little Lever was involved in a collision with a Dodge pick-up truck at the junction of Market Street and Chapel Street, Little Lever.

Big traffic jams built up around Little Lever after the accident at 12.30pm yesterday as emergency crews treated Mrs Halsam at the scene before she was taken to hospital. Truck driver Wayne Kirwin, aged 27, of Plumpton Drive, Bury, suffered shock but was not detained in hospital.

A Bolton hospital spokesman said Mrs Haslam was "gravely ill" today.

Traffic police are asking witnesses to contact them on 0161 872 5050.

And a driver amazingly escaped with minor injuries last night when his car crashed into a fence then hit a lamp-post.

The spectacular crash happened at about 9pm on Chorley Old Road near the junction with Burnham Avenue.

Andrew Thompson, aged 47, of Meadowfield, Lostock, lost control of his BMW convertible before it crashed into a fence. The impact then pushed the car into the lamp-post which crashed onto the roof.

Amazingly Mr Thompson suffered only minor head injuries and whiplash. He went to hospital but was not detained.
