GUDNI Bergsson will play his way into the history books tonight when he leads Iceland in their World Cup qualifier against Romania in Reykjavik.

The 31-year-old Wanderers skipper and centre-back will play his 71st international, becoming the most capped Icelandic player ever. He equalled the existing record, set by Atli Edvaldsson in 1991, in a 2-0 defeat in a qualifier in Lithuania on Saturday.

A spokesman for the FA of Iceland confirmed that the game would not be affected by the volvanic eruption threatening the Vatnajokull glacier - 120 miles to the east of the capital.

Aidan Davison is set to come in from the cold to the heat of a Division One derby duel after leaving Wanderers for Ipswich Town.

The Northern Ireland keeper has joined the Suffolk club on a month's loan and is on standby for Friday's night's Sky TV showdown with East Anglian rivals Norwich at Carrow Road.

Davison cannot get a game at Burnden, where he is now third in line behind Keith Branagan and Gavin Ward. But he has answered an SOS from Portman Road boss George Burley, who has experienced keeper Craig Forrest away on international duty with Canada and highly-rated 18-year-old Richard Wright doubtful with a back injury.

Wright tested his fitness in a reserve team outing yesterday and, provided he shows no reaction, will be in the derby line-up with Davison on the bench as a precaution.

WOLVES midfielder Darren Ferguson has been banned for three games following his last-minute sending off against Wanderers at Molineux last week.
