A LOCAL community is in danger of losing its battling residents' association because of a lack of interest.

A hard-working band of stalwarts at Blenheim Road Residents' Association, Breightmet, are urging local people to turn up for a crunch meeting tomorrow.

Chairman Leslie Parnell says that if they do not the year-old association may fold.

Mr Parnell said: "We need at least 10 people to turn up at the meeting on Friday for us to be voted in democratically.

"If we fail to get the 10 votes then we will have to close. It's a shame. These five people have been very hard working all year and have given up their spare time to help the local residents.

"But it makes me very angry that no-one shows any interest. People seem to be so negative and it seems to me that they just don't care."

Pressure from the residents' association has brought a number of improvements to the estate, including a £60,000 refurbishment scheme.

"We have altered the quality of life for a number of local people. This action committee could really help a lot of people. But we need support," Mr Parnell added.

The committee's annual general meeting at the Blenheim Road Estates Office attracted just two residents.

Mr Parnell said: "Residents' associations are usually very successful but even a nearby group on Garstang Avenue looks set to close. We really need local people to change their attitudes."

People living in the Blenheim Road area are asked to turn up at the meeting at 11am on Friday at the Blenheim Road Estates Office.
