BOLTON's Bonfire Safety team is again asking people to register their bonfires with Bolton Council.

The Registration Scheme will allow the Police, Fire Service and the Council to know how many and where the bonfires will be during Guy Fawkes celebrations.

The site will be checked free of charge and it is felt that it could be a danger by being too near properties, or in other ways, it will be removed.

People building bonfires on council-owned land must have written permission and be fully insured beforehand.

To register your bonfire and get permission, if it is on council-owned land, you will need to contact 01204 522311 extension 4084.

You can also call in at the Health Promotion mobile unit which will be on the Town Hall Square. To register, call in on Tuesday October 22, or on Friday October 25 between 1pm-3pm.

"Most people use their common sense when building bonfires and they don't build them near property or in other dangerous positions," a spokesman from the Bolton Bonfire and Firework Safety Strategy Group said.

"We do, however, have to check the siting of each bonfire and there have been occasions where they have been built in dangerous positions and have had to be removed. We want the celebrations to be safe and fun."

Anyone who sees a bonfire being built which they think could be a danger to property or in other ways should contact the special 01204 535241 number which is manned around the clock.
