SIR: My late mother, Mrs L Hayes, worked at Bolton Infirmary in 1905. She often recalled the tower being built. When it was finished the builders celebrated by inviting any hospital staff to a ride to the top in the hoist that had carried the bricks and mortar to build it.
My mother said that she, and others, enjoyed the rough ride and saw a bird's eye view of Bolton, as it was in 1905.
