SIR: When I see the TV advertisements by North West Water, I am lulled into a deep tranquil reminiscence of the days in 1943 when I was stationed at an airfield at Madley, Hereford.
The RAF supplied good clean water for showers and shaving. But the latrines had to be emptied by the poor groundstaff into a septic tank on the back of a bantam lorry, so naturally I am thankful for the service provided by NWW, even though I wish they would leave a bit of room in the fat cat trough for the soil and extremely dirty water that came through my shower head at 9.35am Friday 27th while showering in the bath.
When I cleaned myself as best I could I angrily complained to them. Why wasn't I warned that filth would be coming through the pipes or better still turn it off beforehand. My neighbours were left with a washer full of whites and dirty water, my aged neighbour was just running a bath of filth. A NWW rep did call later and explained the problem. He inspected the shower and passed it OK. A management official phoned to say there was no health risk by ingestion. I shall just have to wait and see.
