THE Whitakers Department store in Deansgate, Bolton is undergoing a £500,000 facelift.

The work will be completed by November 12 when owners JE Beale plc will re-launch the store with a special Gala Night and Civic Reception.

The southern-based, family-owned company added Whitakers to its group portfolio in March.

Four-fifths of this year's investment budget has been allocated to full refurbishment of the store's restaurant.

It will include an impressive glass Atrium roof. A spokesperson said second floor home departments had undergone refits to reintroduce furniture and beds.

The china and glass department on the ground floor had also been extended.

Further work is to continue in the next two years, together with upgrading of the warehouse site. Beales is keen to show its commitment to Bolton and has placed the majority of the contracts with local companies.

It is "business as usual" during the refurbishment.
