SAILORS from Bolton's adopted ship are coming to the aid of local residents in a 'Challenge Anneka-style' operation.
The 12-strong team from HMS Beaver aims to spruce up Barlow Park Residents' Association's new community centre - in just three days this week.
Association secretary Beryl Cross is compiling a list of sponsors and there have been offers of expert help from Bolton College, food from Asda and Macdonalds and scaffolding from Bernard Stott (decorators), of Viola Street.
Two years ago, the sailors restored a disused building in Leverhulme Park.
Mrs Cross said: "We've dreamed of having our own home for a long time.
"We're quite willing to help but most of us are pensioners and we really appreciate the help from the ship's crew.
"Beaver's got the manpower and we're working on materials. Between us we should be able to do everything."
The building, off Dunoon Drive, Astley Bridge, was previously the base for the Sport Aid Foundation.
Leisure services chairman, Cllr Gerald Riley said: "It's a fine building in a really nice setting but it does need renovating."
Anyone who would like to donate equipment or help should contact Mrs Cross on Bolton 412283.
