LIBERAL Democrats have welcomed maverick Bolton MP Peter Thurnham into their party following his decision to join them at the weekend.

Chairman of Bolton's Liberal Democrats Mary Mason said: "We take the party line and welcome his statement.

"I think his decision reflects the views of many Tory voters who feel that the party is no longer fit to govern Britain.

"People know that the Conservatives are not to be trusted." Mr Thurnham explained his decision on GMTV yesterday, blaming it on his growing anxiety at the Government's lack of direction.

He also complained of a lack of leadership in the party and about allegations of sleaze which have weakened it.

The news is a blow to Prime Minister John Major who had called for party unity at the Conservative conference in Bournemouth only two days previously.

The Conservative majority in the House of Commons is unaffected by Mr Thurnham's defection because he is sitting as an independent and has resigned the party whip.
