SIR: I was interested in Conservative Candidate Paul Carter's call for more discipline (Viewpoint, October 4) and would like to add a few suggestions of my own.

Ex-Tory Prime Ministers who destroy entire communities such as Grimethorpe, a once proud pit village now regarded as the 'heroin capital of South Yorkshire', should be made to live in those communities so that they can understand the consequences of their actions.

Fat Cat Directors who sack workers in order to guzzle more share options should be made to explain to the workers' families why dad/mum is being sacked.

Tory MPs who take cash for questions should be sent on compulsory 're-MPing schemes' to remind them that their duty is to the public, not their own pockets.

Dithering Tory Prime Ministers with a majority of 1 should pursue allegations of corruption against Tory MPs with vigour, not do everything they can to avoid the issue.

I am confident that Paul Carter will endorse these suggestions. I am sure he would not want to give the impression that discipline is confined to the masses and does not extend to Tory politicians and their wealthy supporters.
