BRITAIN is standing on the threshold of a period of growth and prosperity unparalleled since the war, Mr Heath told delegates to the Conservative Party conference. WILLIAM Hermann Goering escaped his fate of hanging by committing suicide at 10.45 last night, less than three hours before he would have been executed. He had succeeded in taking cyanide of potassium. After Goering's suicide, the other 10 condemned were manacled to their guards as they were led to the foot of the 13 steps to the gallows. Ribbentrop died first, at 1.11am, and the last, Seyss-Inquart, shouting "I believe in Germany", dropped through the trap at 2.45. All died bravely.

CONSIDERABLE excitement was occasioned at Little Lever for several days last week by a number of colliers well known in the district, carrying about the effigy of a person who, it was alleged, had been guilty of some impropriety towards his sister-in-law, a young woman of 16 or 17 years of age. A party of colliers resolved to express their indignation at the conduct of the person referred to, and undertook to carry an effigy of him round the locality for three nights in succession. They commenced on Tuesday night and performed their task. On Wednesday night they marched from the Seven Stars to the Nag's Head, near which house more than 600 persons were collected. On Thursday evening the procession went from the Seven Stars to Darcy Lever amid much commotion. They returned, and, in the presence of a large crowd, and with the aid of powder and fire, consumed the dummy representative. Subsequently there was a potato pie feast at the Seven Stars, and the host and hostess were duly thanked for their part in the entertainment.
