SIR: The recent case of a woman unfairly sacked because she was receiving treatment for cancer offers a frightening glimpse of what we can expect from a Tory fifth term.
In 1979, the unions were deemed too powerful. Now, 17 years later, we have a situation where company executives award themselves astronomic pay rises while shedding thousands of jobs in the name of 'downsizing'. At least if sacked today you have a right to appeal if you think it is illegal. However, the Tories now plan to rip up this last piece of legislation that safeguards against abuses of power. The lady who was sacked because she had cancer was able to appeal and was rightly compensated. However, if this government is re elected this protection will go.
I would say to any readers who are contemplating voting Tory at the next election, think hard before you vote. If this government wins again they have pledged to give companies the freedom to sack you whenever they want and for any reason. Do you feel safe enough in your job to take that chance?
