work has begun on turning into parkland the worst industrial eyesore in the Bolton area - the 33 acres of poisonous chemical waste at the Old Hall Lane works in the Croal Valley. It is the first step in a long-term plan to give back pre-industrial beauty to the whole Croal-Irwell valley from Bolton to Salford.

SIR - It would be in the interests of all concerned if some responsible person paid a visit to some of Bolton's dance halls on Saturday nights. These halls are dangerously overcrowded. It is grossly unfair to the public, who find that after paying for admission the halls are packed. Something should be done to ensure comfort and safety for dancers. Yours, etc., Foxtrot.

From the Evening News, October 18, 1871

THIS morning, about six o'clock, a youth named Moses Dawson, aged 14 years, son of Mr T. Dawson, collier, High Stile, Kearsley, and employed as a drawer or wagoner at the Dou Pit, Kearsley, belonging to Mr S. Scowcroft, was killed whilst descending the shaft along with three others, all proceeding to their work. When the cage was within about six yards from the bottom of the shaft, and at the time the engine was slackened, the deceased incautiously put his head so far out of the cage that it was caught by some projecting framework with such force as to drag him out of the cage, and to cause him to fall to the bottom of the shaft. He was immediately attended to, and conveyed to the top of the pit again. but he died about 10 minutes afterwards.
