BURY town centre users can take a peek at the possible shape of things to come. Later this month two exhibition days have been organised to allow local residents and businesses to view proposals which form part of the Bury Town Centre Traffic Management Scheme. Last year views of the public were sought on a town centre strategy and, as a result, a series of measures are to be promoted aimed at removing non-essential traffic from Bolton Street, Market Street, Haymarket Street, Moss Street, Silver Street, Broad Street and The Rock.

At the same time, the aim is to reduce the speed of vehicles which still have to use the area and the plans are also intended to improve the general environment, assist safe movement and accessibility for pedestrians around the town centre and encourage greater use of public transport.

Bury Metro's Development Services Committee Chairman, Cllr Julie Higson, said: "We are now planning a four week long period of public consultation which will run until mid-November. It will involve di stributing an information leaflet incorporating a questionnaire with all the proposals and staging a series of exhibitions in the town centre."

Traffic and Engineering Sub-committee Chairman, Cllr Winston Ramsey added: "The results of this public consultation will be reported back to committees and in due course detailed proposals will be subject to more formal consultation procedures before any final scheme is considered for adoption."

On Tuesday, October 29 council officers will be at The Met in Market Street from 10am to 4pm and again, on Wednesday, October 30, at the Castle Leisure Centre to answer questions. Copies of the leaflet and questionnaire can also be obtained from Mark Edwards at the Engineering Division on 0161 253 5816.
