TWO Bolton events are helping to make ChildLine's 10th birthday a profitable occasion. At the Greenfields Private Members' Club in Westhoughton, a charity concert sponsored by the Bolton Evening News and Warburtons' family bakers, raised £762. Keyboards' player Steve Ronfell was asked by Andrew Dixon, manager of the Spar Store at 257 St Helens Road, Bolton, to provide live entertainment as part of a national initiative by Spar stores nationally.
This is aimed at raising £240,000 to help the charity operate its vital night-time telephone help service for children.
Brian Foster produced the show, Lisa Wilson was the vocalist and the Hayward School Choir also provided enjoyable entertainment.
As well as resulting in an enjoyable and successful evening, a donated ChildLine cake was later taken to Bolton General Hospital (with the help of Wilson's Coach Travel of Darbyshire Street) and donated to the children's ward.
A delighted Andrew Dixon thanked all the entertainers, sponsors - including Pure Asphalt - prize donors including Newy and Eyre Electrical Ltd, and Bill and Angela Richards, owners of Greenfields. He also passed on his gratitude to all the local stores and companies who had helped, and to the appreciative audience on the night.
And two fashion shows held at the Albert Halls last weekend proved a dazzling success. Nearly 50 amateur models had been working for several months with organiser Julieanne Embley to stage the sell-out shows for ChildLine.
The result was a popular and professional double performance that delighted the audience . . . and raised a remarkable £2,000 for ChildLine.
Julieanne said: "It all went well and ChildLine have already asked me to make the show an annual event. I'll be meeting them later this month to see if this can be arranged."
Local firms BHS, Black Designs, Ciro Citterio, Classic Brides, Classic Formal Wear, Felicity Hat Hire, Mothercare, Pumpkins of Manchester's Barton Arcade and Ridgeway Park Florists figured prominently on the day. Boots No.7 in Bolton also did the models' makeovers.
And Julieanne passed on her thanks to all the other firms and organisations who had helped on the day, and especially the models. "They were brilliant!" she said.
