TEN thousand homes in the North-west were without electricity today after a swollen river flooded a sub-station at Agecroft Power Station. Flooding closed roads, caused traffic chaos, and left families stranded in their homes as torrential rain lashed the country. The North-west was one of the worst hit areas. Bolton had almost 2 inches of rain in 24 hours.

HOW the £50,937 raised by the Mayor of Bolton's football disaster fund is to be disposed of was decided at a meeting yesterday, presided over by Lord Derby, the hon. president. Grants already made are £3,450 to widows, and £1,070 to other beneficiaries. The public will find that the fund has been equitably distributed among the various people who are to benefit. With regard to children, each has been allocated a share of a sum amounting to £11,878, and a trust deed is to be created to safeguard their interests.

IT is stated that the Corporation are in treaty with the Bolton Gas Company for the purchase of their very valuable property, but the scheme is not sufficiently matured for details to be published. Suffice it to say that the offer is under consideration, and so anticipation is expressed that both parties will come to a mutually satisfactory arrangement, so that there shall be no necessity for taking the extreme measure of using compulsory powers. We are also informed that an offer has been made by the South Lancashire Waterworks Company for the transfer of their works to the Corporation.
