SIR: I read with interest the article on breast cancer and the new Breast Unit at Bolton General. I had breast cancer nearly three years ago and like Councillor Dylis Barry, I had a positive outlook towards it.

When Mr Richard Salem said he wanted to remove the tumour, I thought, well I had my appendix out, I had a hysterectomy, and I was quite well after that, so what makes this any different? I had the tumour removed, then when the scar had healed, I had three weeks radio therapy at Christie's, where you are treated with respect.

I had no side effects from the radio therapy and have felt really well ever since.

I see Mr Salem every six months. I think he is really great.

I would just like to end by saying to all women who are asked to go for a mammogram (breast screening): "Go for it".

It could save your life. It takes just minutes, but those minutes could be the difference between life and death and remember there is life after breast cancer.
