WHEN this game kicked off Chorley were the Unibond League's top scorers while Spennymoor with 26 league goals were just one behind.

Sod's Law therefore probably dictated that this match would finish with a blank scoreline and so it proved.

It was pretty poor fare, though to be fair to the players the pitch at the Brewery Field was absolutely diabolical.

It was also a predictable outcome as every time Chorley have visited Spennymoor a draw has resulted.

Chorley were playing down the considerable slope in the first half but couldn't create any worthwhile chances.

The Magpies were caught offside on numerous occasions and some of the decisions were marginal to say the least.

Defensively Chorley experienced few problems with Thorpe and Wright outstanding - in Wright's case you could say 'as usual.'

The Magpies suffered a blow when Marginson was carried off just before half time to complete an eventful week for the midfielder. In the last three games he has been sent off once and carried off twice!

Marginson's injury gave an opportunity for young reserve team player Steve Grunshaw, who performed well enough on his debut.

Haw had a rare chance early in the second half but thumped his well struck volley wide.

Spennymoor were reduced to long range shooting and Marsh was rarely called upon as the game was bogged down in midfield for long spells.

With 15 minutes left Chorley had a blatant penalty refused when Haw was clearly pulled down in the box by O'Hara but referee Atherton, who had an awful match, surprised everyone by waving play on.

This Saturday, Chorley travel to Frickley and on Monday go to Great Harwood for a League Cup tie. For coach details ring Fraser on 234853.
