SIR: As ex-pupils of Devonshire Road CP School we were rather concerned to read in the Bolton Evening News recently that the school had been built, in the first instance, as an Open Air School for delicate children. We would like to correct this statement as we, who were some of the original pupils of this school, were far from delicate and, in fact, were thought to be so healthy that we were involved in the moving of the contents of the original school into the new one, which was one of the first new school buildings to be opened in Bolton in the 1920s.

The original school building was a large tin hut which was frequently flooded when it rained.

Due to the rapid expansion of residential property in this area it was essential to provide sufficient places for those children born in the years following the conclusion of the first world war - hence the 'new' Devonshire Road CP School. We are sure that other ex-pupils of this era would verify this point.
