HARRY Ackers has raised a glass on his retirement after 44 years with Bolton Council.

Horticultural expert Harry started his career as an apprentice at Heaton Cemetery glasshouse in 1951, and among his wide ranging responsibilities in recent years have been the care of the former Butterfly World at Queens Park, and the animal world and model railway at Moss Bank park.

Away from work, Harry has spent much of his spare time giving horticultural advice and lectures.

He is a lecturer for the Royal Horticultural Society and has lectured for the Adult Education Services for the past 24 years.

He is held in such high esteem among the gardening fraternity that he is regularly asked to judge at local shows.

This year he was honoured by being invited to be a regional judge for the Britain in Bloom competition.
