BURY Council are proud to be making a meal of their in-house catering contract, which fought off fierce competition from the private sector.
The award of the School Meals and Catering Contract, which involves over 100 municipal establishments, has ensured 500 jobs remain with the Local Authority.
Cllr Kevin Scarlett, Chairman of Bury Metro's Competitive Services sub-committee, who awarded the contract, said : "I am delighted with the outcome which will benefit the Authority in numerous ways, ensuring continuity of service is maintained and that the job security of many long term staff members is assured."
Cllr Scarlett said that the cost of the service has been dramatically reduced, which will result in savings of over £150,000 per year. He maintained that this is without compromise of quality and hygiene standards.
The award follows a council programme of massive capital investment in up-grading kitchens and modernising many school dining areas.
The £2.4m contract lasts for five years.
