A 92-YEAR-old woman found seriously injured in a Leigh street may have been a mugging victim
The woman is said to be "very poorly" in in the neuro-surgical ward at the Royal Preston Hospital with serious head injuries.
Spinster Helen Bootle, from the Hope Street area of the town, was found near the post office on Bond Street at about 11.20am yesterday.
Police are treating the incident as suspicious but Chief Insp Steve Westcott at Leigh said investigations would continue with an "entirely open mind."
He said her injuries could have been caused by her collapsing, but an attack is not being ruled out.
It is thought that yesterday was pension day for Miss Bootle. She was found without a handbag or anything which would have identified her at the scene.
Born and bred in Leigh, she lives alone at her current address which has been her home for more than 20 years.
