DISAPPOINTED Red Moss tip developers UK Waste today hit out at Bolton's momentous decision to scrap a huge super-tip.
The North-west company claims Bolton and the whole of Greater Manchester faces a "waste crisis" following Thursday's decision to kick-out their development at Horwich.
As reported in last night's BEN, Bolton Council planners rejected the landfill site due to public pressure following a 10,000 named petition against the proposals.
UK Waste today say they will examine the decision very closely before considering an appeal. Neil Varey, UK Waste's general manager, said:"We are disappointed by this decision, which has clear implications for the whole of Greater Manchester.
"Currently, Red Moss is the only site in the Greater Manchester area identified by a planning authority for development as a strategic waste disposal facility."
He added:"Capacity for landfill disposal is disappearing fast and Greater Manchester's waste is already being exported to neighbouring areas."
Mr Varey said local households generated over one million tonnes of waste each year. And he called on local politicians and residents to face the problem.
He added: "Recycling is certainly part of the solution and UK Waste is at the forefront of waste reduction and recycling development across the country.
"However, recycling will only go a small way towards resolving what is fast becoming a growing waste crisis that needs to be addressed by everyone - the people, the politicians and the planners - who live and work in Greater Manchester."
