THE head of Leigh and Wigan Health Services has stepped down from his high profile post.

Dr Sandy Bradbrook, Chief Executive of Wigan and Leigh Health Services NHS Trust, has shifted over to the NHS Executive North West to lead a special project.

The surprise move comes after a period of intense speculation and in a press statement from the Trust a spokeswoman says the former head of the old Wigan Health Authority had been considering a career move "for a little while." Dr Bradbrook will relinquish his responsibilities as Chief Executive on Friday. Trust Finance Director, Jeff Marks, will take over as acting chief executive until a successor.

A statement from the Trust said: "The Trust Board would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Dr Sandy Bradbrook for his leadership of the trust over the last three and a half years.

"A great deal has been achieved and good foundations have been laid for the future."
