PART-time soldier Joseph Harris has beaten the odds to receive top acclaim for exceptional service.
The father-of-two, from Heaton, was the only Territorial Army soldier to be awarded the Lord Lieutenant Certificate at a ceremony at Preston Barracks.
Warrant Officer Joseph, who works for Bolton Council's Commercial Services, serves in the 4th (Volunteer) Battalion, The Queen's Lancashire Regiment.
He picked up the honour for his dedication despite being left to bring up his two children alone following the death of his wife two years ago.
The citation said: "Many a lesser man might have wavered from his daunting task and since this personal tragedy he has not flinched and indeed his commitment is as strong and enthusiastic as ever."
