A SENIOR lecturer at Bolton College has made his first foray into the world of publishing - with a little help from the BEN.

Stephen Pearson, together with former colleague from Mid-Cheshire College, Katherine Kemp, wrote the book - 'Leisure and Tourism for Intermediate Level GNVQ' - over a 12 month period.

It is the first to cover optional units on the course and will be used in schools and colleges.

"The Bolton Evening News helped with the research for one section of the book and we were very grateful for their assistance," said Stephen.

The book has just been published by Longman to some very favourable reviews.

Comments about the book have included: "pitched at the right level" and "thoroughly enjoyable and the best so far from an interest and content point of view." It covers topics including the sport and fitness industry, and the operational practices and environmental impact of tourism.

Stephen, who was recently made a full-time senior lecturer in sport, leisure and tourism at Bolton College, said: "It was hard work and very time consuming but we both enjoyed it."

Now the pair have joined forces again; they have written part of an Advanced GNVQ textbook due to be published in December, and also currently writing a book covering the mandatory units at intermediate level.

But they have no plans to become full-time authors. "We would like to do both really," said Stephen. "The book is based on our experience in teaching and I think that working on it has made us better teachers as well."
