The tenement block rose from below
Almost reaching Heaven's door
Poor pensioners live at ground floor level
Hassled nightly by the devil
While in the clouds above
Live single mothers giving love
To cherished children
Living in a cloud filled sky
Yearning for a meadow sweet
Upon which to place their feet
What future for them is offered
In these impoverished times
Job centre or life of crime?
They see no role models for to copy
And are thwarted from their destiny
Prams and children crowd the stairway
For the lift is out of order
Smashed by vandals in disarray
Going about their daily play.
What hope can be given these dispossessed
Enduring life in Heaven's nest? Mr I Platt, Thornton Avenue, Heaton
