CHILDREN on a Bolton estate could miss out on youth club fun unless a minibus can be found to get them there.
Mrs Jean Mulvaney, 50, of Hunger Hill Avenue, has appealed for someone to come forward and take the kids to the John Holt Youth Centre in Westhoughton.
She has been campaigning for community facilities on the Hunger Hill council estate for several months.
Children on the estate built their own playground in April and Jean stepped up her action in September when she discovered that it had been wrecked. Since then she has campaigned for the 60 children on the estate.
She joined with Bolton Council to secure her most notable success to date, organising a trip to Sharples School every Monday for the youngsters to play football.
Her hard work in making contacts was reflected in a recent itemised phone bill which was NINE pages long!
Jean, who has a son Gareth, 15, said of the bill: "It is for the kids so I am not bothered."
Two portacabins have been promised by the National Coal Board for use as a snack bar, youth club and meeting place. They will probably be situated on land behind Knutshaw Crescent but ultimately Jean wants a permanent youth club for the estate.
For the time being she needs the loan of a minibus to transport kids to the John Holt Youth Centre on Birch Avenue four nights a week.
She said: "The children have been told they are more than welcome at the youth centre. But they will need transport at about 6.30pm and 10.30pm, Tuesday to Friday.
"Eventually we want a youth club, play area and football pitch on the estate. But for now we will have to travel and use other facilities. "The kids are climbing over each other every week to get on the football trip to Sharples. I hope we will be able to involve some of the younger ones eventually.
"I also hope that parents will get involved and lend their support to the campaign in the future."
The John Holt Youth Centre is open from Tuesday to Friday between 7pm and 10pm. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays it is open for young men and women aged between 15 and 20. And on Fridays it caters for boys and girls aged between 10 and 15.
