THERE was a suit at the Court of Chancery by William Bleakley, now of Ramsbottom, in the township of Tottington, Lancashire, against John Hall and Walter Scowcroft, of Bolton-le-Moors, the trustees of the marriage settlement of plaintiff's late wife. It was for the purpose of compelling them to surrender to him the property to which it related.

Mr Little, QC, for the plaintiff, stated that at the time his client married his late wife, Margaret Scowcroft, she was possessed, among other property, of a certain public house called the Horse and Coaches, at Ainsworth, near Bolton. The interest in this, with other property, was previous to her marriage assigned to trustees, the defendants in this case.

The business at the Coach and Horses was then carried on by the plaintiff and his wife, during her lifetime. At her death (she having died intestate) the defendants claimed to be entitled to the whole of the household furniture, stock in trade &c., and had them valued for £1,170. The plaintiff, being ignorant of his rights, submitted to this. The plaintiff now claimed the stock in trade, either in his marital rights or as legal representative of his late wife.

Mr Fry, QC, for the defendants, contended that on the words of the settlement it was evident the plaintiff's attempt to claim the property, which was intended to benefit the intestate's children, could not stand.

The case was not concluded when the Court rose.
