IMAGINE having to cope with schoolwork, adolescence and looking after an ill parent 24 hours a day.
That's the struggle some 40,000 young carers with an average age of 12 face throughout the country.
Now Chorley and South Ribble has appointed its first young carers worker, Lynda Smith, to gather information, increase awareness and provide support on a local level.
Lynda said: "Young carers have always been there and some have informal support through friends and family, but there are many who work alone and don't speak of their situation.
"They are often seen as just part of the family but their efforts need to be recognised and appreciated, just like workers.
"Now their needs and rights as a carer and as a CHILD are being acknowledged thanks to laws implemented this year.
"They need practical help such as how to lift somebody, budgeting skills, medical care and domestic duties. They also need to let off steam, have a break, the chance to have fun with other children, and also time and space when they themselves are ill.
"Young carers do a very good job and adapt to their situation, but it can be a great emotional strain which leaves many mental scars for life.
"They can suffer from lack of concentration at school, reduced career prospects, poverty, and social isolation, especially when the problem is related to mental health, drugs or AIDS.
"Caring in childhood can restrict or impair a child's personal growth and development and it's important we assist them to develop more fully. I'm going forward with realism, enthusiasm and hope."
