HEAVY overnight rain saw water levels rise and, coupled with high winds blowing towards the Dam Wall, had anglers meeting for Wednesday's Doffcocker Open hoping for a low number draw.

Accurate bait presentation of red maggot on quiver tip was the method of the day with most fish falling to Marvin Hyde (Appollo Motors). His 4-2-0 net of skimmers from peg five was well clear of next peg angler - end peg four - Terry Carter (Castle), weighing 2-7-0 of small skimmers.

Ben Martin (Benmar), continued on from last week, taking third place from peg 20 in the shallows with two good skimmers for his 2-5-0.

SUNDAY saw Bolton Co-op AC contest the Novices Trophy for members who had not won a cup during the season, in foul conditions on Doffcocker Reservoir.

Mark Holmes fished quiver tip with pinkie and maggot from probably the most exposed part of the reservoir to give a masterly exhibition of accurate casting in the gale force winds and driving rain.

A testimony to the winner's ability was the 6-13-0 he passed the scalesman from peg 22 to take the bulk of prize money but not the silverware.

The trophy went home with Alan Humphrey who landed 6-1-0 of pristine skimmers from peg 12, by the notice board, taking fish throughout the match.

Bill Fox showed his true talent weighing a creditable 3-10-0 of roach and skimmers to take third place from normally unproductive peg 14.

WHEN Church Ward AC visited Brookside Carp Fisheries on Sunday hopes were high after hearing that the Friday Open Match was won with an unseasonal weight of 24-0-0.

Plenty of carp were hooked but landing them proved to be the difficult part.

In all five anglers landed fish each with the winner Tony Birchall, slipping the net under a common carp weighing 3-2-0 which fell to waggler fished maggot.

Cliff Wray was left to think what might have been had he landed any of his other three hooked fish when the solitary captive registered 2-7-0 on the scale dial leaving Kenny Legg third on the podium with his 1-13-0 specimen.

THIS week sees the Saturday Rumworth Reservoir match moved into the 'lake' in the hope of locating the good head of bream the water holds, weather permitting. Meeting and draw time is at the reservoir 9am with fishing from 10am/3pm.

GREENWOOD AC members are reminded of the club's annual general meeting to be held next Tuesday at Plodder Lane Conservative Club. Chairman David McFarland is looking foward to an improved turnout from the club membership.
