HEALTH workers in Bolton are working to highlight awareness and understanding of HIV and AIDS.

A number of local event will be held in the week before World AIDS Day, Sunday, December 1.

On November 25 there will be a candlelight vigil at the Friends Meeting House in Silverwell Street from 7-9pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Primary school children in Westhoughton and Horwich, will be shown an award winning puppet show which supports the teaching of health information.

On November 26, Bolton BYPASS is organising an awareness day and in the evening there will be a special performance by the Octagon Youth Theatre relating to HIV and AIDS. The production, starting at 7.30pm, will also be help on the Wednesday and will be signed for the hearing impaired. On November 27, a report will be launched on the voluntary sector's role combatting AIDS. It was commissioned by Bolton Social Services and has been carried out by the Council for Voluntary Service.

A social event is being held at Hawthorns Night Club on November 28 from 10pm-2am.

Information stands will be placed in the club at night and in Halliwell Health Centre from 10am-4pm.

Throughout the weekend of November 30 and Sunday 31, red ribbons will be distributed to the public.

All money raised will go towards the Manchester-based AIDS charity, The Village, but cash raised in Bolton will be spent in the town.
