POLICE were today investigating a mystery crash after a car left the road and smashed into a concrete pillar.

Emergency services were called to the scene when a Volvo seven series struck a concrete road support on St Peter's Way last night.

Volvo driver Barry Chapman was trapped for more than half an hour as firemen cut him free.

Mr Chapman, aged 57, of Blackburn Road, Egerton, was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital with chest and ankle injuries.

Today he was in a "comfortable" condition.

Technical experts were expected to examine the Volvo to check for any possible defects.

Engineers from Bolton Council were called to the scene last night to examine the damage to the pillar next to the south-bound carriageway which supports a bridge near the junction with Raikes Lane.

Witnesses to the accident at about 9pm last night should call motorway police on 0161 872 5050.
