A WOMAN had to be cut free from the tangled remains of a car after a three vehicle pile-up on a moorland road near the Bolton-Darwen border.
Catherine Millard, aged 41, was trapped for 40 minutes in the wreckage of her Fiesta after the crash on the A666 Blackburn Road.
Mrs Millard, of Fulmar Drive, Sale, suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries. She is in the intensive care unit at Blackburn Royal Infirmary, where her condition was "stable".
The accident, in which a Bolton woman escaped uninjured, forced police to close the road for 90 minutes. Mrs Millard's car was in a head-on crash with a Mercedes lorry driven by James Tristram, 46, of Warwick Road, Failsworth.
The Fiesta spun round and collided with a Metro being driven by 50-year-old Avril Morris, of LImefield Road, Smithills. Neither she nor Mr Tristram were injured.
Blackburn police traffic unit are appealing for witnesses. The accident happened shortly after 2pm yesterday.
